Overview

Subtext ("we", "us", or "our") is an AI-powered mobile app that helps you understand what your partner actually means. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your information.

What we collect

  • — Anonymous device identifier. We create a unique identifier for your device when you first open the app. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any other identifying information unless you choose to provide it.
  • — Gender preferences. During onboarding you may optionally provide your gender and your partner's gender. This is used only to personalise the language in translation results (e.g. "she" vs "he" vs "they").
  • — Message input and context. The text you enter for translation, plus any optional context you provide.
  • — Translation history. The AI-generated results for your translations, stored so you can review them in the app.

How we use your data

  • — Your message and context are sent to our AI service to generate a translation result.
  • — Gender preferences are used to personalise the language in your results.
  • — Translation history is stored in our database so you can access it within the app.
  • — We do not use your data to train AI models.
  • — We do not sell your data to third parties.

Third parties

To generate translations, your message and context are sent to an AI API provider (an OpenAI-compatible service). This provider processes your data in accordance with their own privacy policy. We do not share your device identifier, gender preferences, or any other personal information with this provider — only the message text and context you submit for translation.

Data retention

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. Accounts with no activity for 12 months may be deleted along with all associated data. You can also request deletion of your account at any time by contacting us (see below) — your translations, gender preferences, and device identifier will be permanently removed from our systems.

Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS. We store data on secured servers with access controls in place. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Children's privacy

Subtext is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 17. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Analytics

We collect basic, anonymised analytics to help us understand how the app is used and to diagnose crashes and errors. This data does not include the content of your translations and cannot be used to identify you personally.

Governing law

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of India. Any disputes arising in connection with this policy shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of India.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
